Being successful in life is about making good decisions. Whether it’s sports, business, marriage, personal life, you name it! if you can make more good decisions than bad decisions, you’ll have a chance to succeed. The characteristics that I felt would best benefit the ability to make good decisions were: COMMITMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY, DISCIPLINE and SACRIFICE.
The first letter of each word spells the word CARDS. When I was a head coach, I thought that if I could make available the resources that would help develop these characteristics, then I could help them be productive young men and athletes. The ability of my players to make good decisions also increased my chances to win games. And when you compete at the highest level in college athletics, winning is how you keep your job.
One of the resources I encouraged, was to get my players involved and connected to a local church. I felt like the local church was a group of people that were committed and were striving to make good decisions. I also felt like they would hear and learn about Jesus Christ, and he surely knew something about commitment, accountability, responsibility, discipline, and sacrifice.
There are several verses in the Bible that talk about the importance of church attendance, my favorite is Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” However, if I was going to encourage my players to go to church, then it was important that my family and I regularly attend a local church. Years later, my wife and I and both our children and their families are actively involved in local churches.
If you want to be successful, you need to develop the characteristics that will help you make good decisions. There is no better place to make this happen than your local church!
